Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, counseling, or social sciences; Masters Preferred
- Strong preference for candidates with experience in counseling and/or advising college students
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse student population, both individually and in groups
- Experience in academic youth programs, non-profits, or higher education, with exposure to crisis intervention and/or advocacy counseling
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Must be open-minded, non-judgmental, and capable of interacting with and advising diverse groups.
- Genuine interest in assisting low-income and first-generation college students overcome challenges and succeed
- Energetic, engaging, and positive personality with the ability to encourage student participation and engagement in the program
- Willingness to work flexible hours as needed, including on-campus overnight stays during the TRiO summer orientation program
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint, with the ability to learn new computer database systems.
Responsibilities
- Conduct personalized advising sessions to address students’ academic, financial and personal needs
- Provide guidance on career path and graduate school opportunities, help students create actionable plans
- Develop and implement individualized action plans to support students’ academic and personal success
- Keep detailed records of student profiles and progress to track development and outcomes.
- Address and defuse situations of conflict and crisis, providing appropriate referrals when necessary
- Assist students with course selection and registration processes, collaborating with their faculty advisors to align academic and career goals
- Partner with the financial aid office, student accounts, and registrar’s office to help students complete necessary paperwork and meet institutional and federal deadlines
- Design, organize, and conduct workshops and activities on a variety of topics, including academic, social, leadership, career, personal, financial, and cultural subjects.
- Oversee the development and execution of the TRiO mentorship and ambassador programs.
- Assist in developing and executing the on-campus summer orientation program.
- Motivate and encourage students through regular interactions and discussions.
- Collaborate with university departments, faculty, tutors, and academic support staff to advocate for and address the academic needs of TRiO students.
- Work closely with the director and staff on future projects and tasks to ensure accurate and efficient program evaluation and expansion.
- Plan and participate in annual national conferences.
- Assist in hiring and supervising up to three student workers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
