Requirements

• Technical School certificate course in Surgical Technology required
• 15 continuing education hours related to the practice of surgical technology must be maintained annually to continue employment
• 1-3 years of operating room surgical technician experience required
• CST – Certified Surgical Technologist required
• CPR – Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation within three (3) months of hire and must be maintained required
• BCLS – Basic Life Support required

Responsibilities

• Prepares the operating room for surgical cases, ensuring all equipment, instruments, and supplies are properly organized and available by applying principles of Universal Precautions, asepsis, and sterile technique
• Maintains aseptic techniques and ensures sterile field integrity during surgical procedures
• Anticipates the surgeon’s needs during procedures, efficiently passing instruments and materials as required
• Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating nurse to ensure patient safety
• Retains, labels, and documents specimens for pathology accurately, ensuring proper handling and transfer
• Assists with patient positioning, draping, and transfer methods to ensure safety and comfort
• Cleans, reprocesses, and sterilizes surgical instruments and equipment following established protocols
• Demonstrates knowledge of emergency protocols and takes appropriate action in emergency situations
• Assists in maintaining and updating physician preference cards to reflect procedural requirements
• Contributes to perioperative team efficiency by restocking supplies, returning equipment to storage, and ensuring operating rooms are ready for subsequent cases
• Performs other duties as assigned
• Complies with all policies and standards
