Requirements
- J.D. degree from a major, accredited law school.
- Admitted to a state bar, active and in good standing.
- Flexibility to work long hours and travel on short notice when needed on behalf of the Firm.
- A minimum of 5 years of appellate litigation experience in a law firm or legal environment.
- Substantial experience in all aspects of appellate practice emphasizing procedure and protocols.
- Knowledge of best appellate practices.
- Ability to articulate case (project) goals, objectives, deliverables, costs, and deadlines; identify tasks; manage resources and schedule needed to achieve objectives.
- Fluency in the technical language of desktop and enterprise business information systems.
- Fluency in the technical language of Federal and State court rules and laws.
- Strong organizational, reasoning, and research skills; creativity; strong written and verbal communication abilities; good judgment; attention to detail; and initiative.
- Flexibility, composure, and the ability to prioritize and handle many urgent tasks and requests simultaneously with a high level of competence and accuracy; the ability to remain composed and professional under stressful circumstances; sensitivity to ethical and confidentiality requirements; strong customer service skills.
- Team work, team-building, and leadership experience.
- Ability to work with little supervision, demonstrating initiative and sound judgment in seeking work, managing work load, and in formulating and recommending projects or alternative ways to complete projects that will benefit the case/client.
Responsibilities
- Manage the progress of appeals, track, and report on progress.
- Be the primary resource to appellate teams in all aspects.
- Prepare shell briefs and appendices.
- Review all appellate filings and conform to necessary formatting and styles.
- Interact with and manage outside vendors related to appellate work.
- Stay current on changes in appellate procedures, requirements, and rules.
- Lead teams of MTO staff providing appellate support as necessary.
- Conduct and supervise cite checks and preparation of briefs for all applicable appellate jurisdictions.
- Respond to work requests from LPS management on a variety of issues and special projects, including training and professional development, staff performance, prompt and complete timekeeping, and program improvements.
- Support business development related to United States Supreme Court cases and appellate jurisdictions.
- Lead training on appellate support processes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
