Requirements

  • College Diploma or University Degree in a related field (Occupational Health & Safety, Risk Management, Engineering)
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional or Certified Safety Professional
  • 7+ years in occupational health & safety roles in cement, aggregates, asphalt, or concrete production industries
  • Progressive leadership experience in H&S at a corporate level
  • Experience with H&S management systems, including incident management, hazard/risk, safe work and contractor management
  • Expert knowledge of the Alberta OHS Act, Regulation Code, and other applicable legislation
  • Expert knowledge of the United States Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations
  • Expert understanding and experience conducting workplace inspections, observations, program reviews and management system auditing
  • Advanced and well-rounded experience developing, implementing, assessing and sustaining H&S programs
  • Experience developing project charters, project plans, implementation plans, communication plans and change management plans
  • Must be willing and able to drive to worksites in a company or rental vehicle safely
  • Must be willing to perform standby on-call duties for H&S support
  • This position is a safety-sensitive role as per ATCO’s Alcohol & Drug Policy. Being fit for duty is critical for this position to support a safe workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Ashcor departments in all aspects of H&S, including proactive identification and evaluation of risks, determining and implementing solutions
  • Participate in pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR), and HAZOPs
  • Develop and facilitate H&S orientation and training (fall protection, confined space entry, WHMIS, respiratory protection, emergency response)
  • Lead and develop strategic H&S projects, initiatives and long-term strategies with the goal of building an industry-leading safety culture
  • Coordinate with the pre-qualification and bid evaluation process to ensure selection of qualified contractors that share Ashcor’s safety values
  • Conduct contractor pre-qualification reviews and assurance activities, on-site management and post project evaluation
  • Provide expert guidance on all elements of H&S, including OHS competency requirements, safety trends, interpretation of H&S regulatory requirements, and H&S related programs (Workers Compensation/Disability Management & Alcohol & Drug Program)
  • Conduct workplace observations, inspections, audits, and employee interviews to identify and resolve non-compliance issues
  • Develop, maintain and test the Emergency Response Plans
  • Coordinate facility ERP exercises, drills and tabletops. Recommend and provide subsequent training, required
  • Lead investigations and root cause analyses when incidents occur; conduct quality reviews and recommend corrective actions
  • Monitor H&S performance and trends and policy/process effectiveness to ensure continuous improvement of safety practices
  • Oversee the audiometric and respiratory protection programs, including coordination of testing and audits.
