Requirements
- Ph.D. in Metallurgy, Material Science, Mechanical Technology, Chemistry or a related field or Master’s Degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, Mechanical Technology, Chemistry or a related field with a minimum of 3 years of experience.
- Knowledge of sample preparation techniques and/or chemical analysis.
- Demonstrated skill using laboratory instrumentation.
- Proficiency or willingness to learn and develop various characterization techniques.
- Ability to multi-task, reprioritize, and deliver in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team advising the team on best characterization techniques to achieve desired results and presenting the findings to aid in establishing structure/processing/property relationships.
- Outstanding attention to detail and excellent problem-solving skills.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required; we will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
- Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.
- Must be 18 years or older.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with a team to plan and execute characterization approaches to achieve the goal of advancing knowledge for materials development.
- Coordinate and operate various characterization equipment as needed to achieve the goal. Examples of characterization techniques include electron microscopy, thermal analysis, bulk chemical analysis, and/or X-ray diffraction.
- Determine the best sample preparation techniques and prepare samples for various characterization technique including high quality metallographic mounts, polishing, etching, and/or sample reduction for chemistry analysis.
- Collaborate with the larger team of experts using various characterization techniques to provide solutions for GE businesses and customers.
- Maintain and operate characterization equipment necessary to complete the tasks.
- Analyze data and provide report to the team using appropriate tools.
- Maintain accurate records of the work performed and other records required by the projects.
- Share project progress through presentations and written reports.
- Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment.
- Perform all work in accordance with EHS guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in electron microscopes, LECO, IC/ICP, XRF, or XRD.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Willing to cross-train and support materials characterization in high demand areas.
- Expertise in the operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Knowledge of instrumentation and computer interfacing to analytical equipment.
- Strong technical aptitude and an analytic approach to problem solving.
- Excellent work ethic, enthusiasm for working on a team, and self-motivation.
- Work independently and as an integral part of the team.
- Safety conscious.
- Ability to prioritize and work under pressure and meet deadlines.
