Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program
- Valid, unrestricted license to practice as a Physician Assistant as issued by the State of Arizona
Responsibilities
- Performs reviews of medical records to determine the cause and manner of death for jurisdictional cases that are not admitted for physical examination
- Documents findings in written reports supported by the medicolegal death investigation
- Reviews items such as hospital charts, medicolegal death investigator reports, and law enforcement agency reports
- Certifies deaths in the state vital records system (DAVE)
- Participates in conferences with family members, law enforcement, attorneys, and other individuals to provide information on investigations
- In rare instances, responds to subpoenas for testimony
- Refers to outside specialists, outside diagnostic studies, and other external services as medically indicated
- Participates in peer review, in-service training, quality improvement processes, and other meetings necessary to improve medicolegal death investigations
- Maintains applicable licensure and skills according to the requirements of State law, Department policies, and licensure agencies
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Examiner, Deputy Chief Medical Examiner, Medical Examiners, or designees
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working as a Physician Assistant
- Experience in a forensic environment
