Requirements
- High School Graduate
- Surgical Technology Certification or degree completion from Surgical Technician Program required. Obstetrics Technicians without certification hired before January 31, 2008 are grandfathered.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) – American Heart Association (AHA) BLS
- National Certification Surgical Technician (DO NOT USE) – National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) (AST) Obstetrics Technicians without certification hired before January 31, 2008 are grandfathered.
Responsibilities
- Validate competency with techniques such as hand washing, vital signs, glucose meter, escorting patients, applying aqua-thermia pad, applying nasal cannula/oxygen mask, applying ice bag, making beds, preparing delivery rooms, performing selected clerical duties, stocking OR and patient rooms, computer skills, taking specimens to lab, positioning the patient, transporting with oxygen tank, urine sample collection, scrubbing for procedures in OR, assisting with transfer and discharge of patients, assisting with procedures requiring sterile technique, transporting babies to full term nursery.
- Attend conferences, in service programs, and meetings as scheduled.
- Demonstrate ability to follow directions and contribute to problem solving and conflict resolution in day to day situations.

- Demonstrate ability to provide care/service safely and efficiently for each patient.

- Demonstrate psychomotor and manual dexterity needed to perform selected DON and area specific standards.
- Participate with the unit team in implementing supportive strategies for cost containment.
- Perform OR procedures following department standards including maintenance of sepsis, positioning, prepping and draping, needle count, instrument count, sponge count, specimen care, and dressing application.
- Prepare instruments and supplies for sterilization; clean and decontaminate instruments; assist in cleaning/preparing OR suite for cases.
- Provide appropriate instrumentation to surgeon during case and perform skills using appropriate techniques and equipment.
- Provide psychological and physical comfort measures to the patient; identify changes in condition and immediately report to the RN/charge nurse/unit coordinator including patient safety concerns.
- Perform purposeful data collection; use electronic record appropriately; participate in department/hospital committee; participate in new product and procedure evaluation.
