Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Information Systems, or JD from an accredited law school, or four or more years of work experience
  • Six or more years of relevant experience required, demonstrated through one or a combination of work and/or military experience, or specialized training
  • Extensive experience in a top law firm and/or public accounting firm, and/or equivalent in-house tax department experience
  • Strong tax technical and tax research analysis skills
  • Experience Microsoft Office and/or G Suite

Responsibilities

  • Thorough knowledge of state and local non-income tax laws, rulings, and regulations; the ability to perform extensive tax research quickly and accurately; the ability to ensure compliance with tax laws and financial requirements; knowledge of financial systems; and the ability to identify and execute on tax planning opportunities to minimize the impact of state and local non-income taxes on Company cash flow and overall tax burden
  • Reviewing and analyzing new business proposals for state, local, and regulatory tax implications and recommending actions that support the business plans while mitigating the tax risk and exposure
  • Assisting tax audit and controversy teams in their management and defense of the company in state and local tax audits
  • Staying up-to-date with changes in state and local tax non-income tax law; specifically including those affecting the telecommunications industry, and keeping other members of Verizon’s Tax Organization informed of such changes
  • Partnering with Verizon’s state tax legislative affairs team to drive Verizon’s tax legislative advocacy, as needed, potentially including drafting support for proposed state tax legislation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Taxation
  • Proven ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and thrive in a fast-paced work environment, including the ability to identify issues, develop creative solutions, and implement them effectively
  • Must be a strong team player, while also independently exercising sound judgment
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, adaptive to and effective for different audiences
  • Specific experience with telecommunications tax issues
  • Intellectually curious, strong work ethic, and a desire to work through challenges and complex issues
  • Strong people leadership skills with the ability to develop personnel, both technically and as future leaders
