Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or relevant medical or scientific discipline required
- At least three years of clinical experience required
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by ASCP BOC or equivalent, or relevant categorical certification required
Responsibilities
- Supports high quality laboratory testing in a clinical laboratory
- Prepares specimens for testing
- Performs routine laboratory tests
- Performs specialized laboratory tests
- Performs quality control
- Troubleshoots quality control errors and maintenance procedures
- Recognizes and evaluates computer data problems
- Troubleshoots laboratory instruments
- Performs preventative maintenance
- Communicates technical information to medical and lay persons
- Assists with training laboratory personnel in routine procedures
- Participates in continuing education
- Recognizes normal and abnormal values
- Models Standards of Behavior in daily interactions and activities
- Monitors and facilitates maximum staff productivity/efficiency in the delivery of quality laboratory testing
- Serves as a facilitator with staff in problem resolution and adjustments to change
- Investigates and resolves complex issues related to all phases of analytical processing and documents appropriately
- Ensures maintenance procedures are monitored, performed and documented correctly
- Monitors Coagulation quality control for shifts and trends
- Troubleshoots QC problems unresolved by bench techs
- Ensures QC documentation are correct
- Reviews, updates, and writes laboratory procedures as needed
- Performs coagulation parallel testing, correlations and reference range evaluations
- Prepares and completes lot conversions as needed and re-evaluates the therapeutic heparin range
- Documents/files all service reports
- Consults with pathologist concerning any unresolved problems
