Requirements
- Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
- Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) within three years of hire
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Advanced Life Support (ACLS) Certification
- Two years of experience in acute care, medical/surgical or ambulatory setting within a hospital environment
- One year of experience caring for MCS/LVAD patients
Responsibilities
- Assess patients in an inpatient setting or outpatient clinic in conjunction with heart failure physician/APRN.
- Facilitate the plan of care and symptom management with inpatient/outpatient staff.
- Review medical information from referring physician and initiate appropriate communication.
- Coordinate with patient’s heart failure physician/APRN and referring physician for evaluation of patient for advanced therapy.
- Assemble test results of evaluation and arrange further testing, if indicated.
- Plan, conduct and evaluate educational activities regarding ventricular assist devices for potential recipients, families and professionals.
- Triage patients during the entire VAD process for any medical and psychosocial issues.
- Coordinate information flow among medical, ancillary, nursing, financial and insurance offices.
- Collaborates with physicians to provide and manage the health care of patients with VADs.
- Assist in obtaining medications and supplies from the appropriate source according to the patient’s insurance coverage.
- Manage equipment, supplies and charges in conjunction with hospital liaisons.
- Support requirements for continued VAD Certification by Joint Commission.
- Participate in research by the implementation of protocols and the collection of data.
- Facilitate procedures to enable the implementation of studies with various interdepartmental components.
- Provide education to patients and caregivers (internal and external) with specific focus on device management, plan of care following implantation of MCS/LVAD, post care responsibilities and how to respond to emergency situations.
- Accompany MCS/LVAD patients to procedures and surgeries.
