Requirements

  • Associate degree from an accredited Radiologic Technology program
  • Current registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
  • Current registration from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) in mammography
  • Licensed by the South Carolina Radiation Quality Standards Association (SCRQSA)
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification

Responsibilities

  • Operate a mammography unit to produce images of the breasts for diagnostic purposes under direction of a physician
  • Explain the procedure to patients
  • Position and immobilize the patient’s breast in unit
  • Observe the scanning process
  • Monitor the video display of the area being scanned and adjust the density or contrast to improve picture quality
  • Review and evaluate the film or image recording plate to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes
  • Keep track of patient records
  • Adjust imaging apparatus as necessary
  • Describe the procedure to patients and respond to any inquiries
  • Adhere to a doctor’s directions for images
  • Use x-ray protection equipment
  • Patient positioning
  • Use machinery to provide diagnostic pictures
  • Picture retouching as necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • 0-2 years of independent mammography experience
