Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience in a library or school setting.
- Experience working with children or families.
- Experience with MS Office, Google suite, and Internet browser applications.
- Knowledge of library resources and functions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons, library staff and the community, including teachers, principals and recreation center staff.
- Ability to work effectively with people of diverse age levels, educational, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in ethnically diverse communities.
- Proficiency with the use of the Google & Microsoft Suite of programs.
Responsibilities
- Provides engaging programs and library services to meet the needs of Maryland Libraries and Baltimore City families and students.
- Assists with the planning and execution of programs for a diverse community, including storytimes, family workshops, afterschool programs, and STEAM activities.
- Assists with all programming in a welcoming manner, including setting up, assisting team members, cleaning after, and collecting evaluations and data.
- Provides excellent reference services in person and via telephone and email for patrons of all ages with a focus on services and programming for Tweens.
- Locates materials for patrons.
- Provides assistance to families using computers.
- Manages behavior of unattended children in the department.
- Assists with activities for programs including storytimes, crafts, and science experiments.
- Refills displays of new and interesting materials curated by department staff.
- Organizes and sanitizes toys available to the public.
- Conducts searches utilizing all media and reference resources.
- Refers complex inquiries to professional librarians.
- Helps patrons locate and access physical and digital materials, including books, newspapers, magazines, and databases.
- Facilitates material requests through local, statewide, and national interlibrary loan systems.
- Assists patrons with the use of library computers, printers, copiers, and other devices.
- Provides guidance on internet searching and standard software applications.
- Troubleshoots basic technology issues and refers complex problems to IT staff.
- Maintains shelves by identifying damaged, missing, or misfiled materials.
- Assesses item condition and performs discarding as needed.
- Recommends new titles based on patron requests and trends.
- Assists with programs for children, tweens and families.
- Prepares presentations and enters event information into the library’s system for marketing in alignment with Compass deadlines.
- Participates in school visits, and library tours to promote departmental services and resources.
- Tracks and logs data related to patron interactions, program attendance, and services provided.
- Reserves meeting rooms and explains related policies and procedures to patrons.
- Assists with displays and may coordinate volunteer assignments.
