Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
- Surgical Technology Program accredited through CAAHEP or ABHES required. Completion of military surgical technology program will meet the requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program. Certification as a Surgical Technologist waives the educational requirement for hire. Acceptable certifications for this route are TS-C (through the National Center for Competency Training) or CST (through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Internal caregivers: one year of experience in a Surgical Technologist role
- External future caregivers: two years of experience in a Surgical Technologist role
Responsibilities
- Monitor, direct and oversee the activities of assigned Surgical Technologists in the OR.
- Perform duties of a Surgical Technologist as needed.
- Provide patient care in the OR by performing in a scrub role.
- Assist in the circulating role as needed.
- Collaborate with SPD to maintain instruments and specialty trays.
- Provide performance documentation.
- Assume department leadership in the absence of the supervisor.
- Review surgical schedules and service line shift reports daily to ensure resources are available for surgical procedures.
- Seek ways to eliminate errors, reduce turnaround time, maintain workflow and improve service.
- Perform and oversee precepting.
