Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or related field with a minimum of 2 years of experience in database administration, data engineering, data/system analytics or IT systems support.
- Strong proficiency in SQL and ETL processes; experience with APIs, CRM platforms, and cloud-based data tools preferred.
- Proven ability to manage complex technical systems independently and with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
- Leads the long-term design, development, and ongoing maintenance of complex alumni-related database systems and environments with university-wide impact.
- Designs, implements, and maintains ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) pipelines and nightly batch jobs to automate the extraction, transformation, and loading of student and alumni data—ensuring data is clean, consistent, and optimized for application development, operational use, and reporting.
- Oversees integration of external data sources (e.g., NCOA updates, scholarship records, EventBright, PeopleGrove, MailChimp, BYU Ticket Office).
- Develops and manages data schemas in the Alumni Data Repository (ADR), including ADR365, Alumpub, and Alumprd.
- Collaborates with OIT on infrastructure updates, security standards, and technology adoption.
- Manages data optimization to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and performance of data storage, processing, and retrieval.
- Independently creates, configures, and monitors ETL tools and automated batch jobs.
- Develops applications, integrates APIs, and manages automation scripts to improve process efficiency and data quality in support of BYU Alumni Relations, university departments, and other CES institutions.
- Uses database tools (e.g., Dremio, SQL, ColdFusion) to provide secure access to web applications and authenticated platforms.
- Maintains and supports API integrations for core alumni platforms (PeopleGrove, EventBright, MailChimp).
- Defines and implements endpoint data standards and manages access for internal stakeholders and third-party tools.
- Participates in selecting and managing tools and platforms that support alumni engagement strategies.
- Collaborate with university departments and other CES institutions on survey design and data collection to gain insights into alumni behavior, perceptions, and engagements.
- Direct integrations of data insights from statistical reports into predictive modeling and behavior analysis that support alumni engagement strategies.
- Works with OIT security to define and enforce policies related to data access, privacy, and protection.
- Maintains documentation for data flows, access policies, technical environments, and system processes.
- Trains and informs users on data handling best practices and evolving system protocols.
- Serves as the primary technical lead for alumni data initiatives.
- Provides mentoring and direction to student employees and project teams.
- Collaborates closely with university data stewards, college departments, and teams responsible for alumni outreach and engagement.
- Supervises Alumni Records and Reporting Manager.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or related field with a minimum of 5 or more years of experience in database administration, data engineering, data/system analytics or IT systems support.
- Excellent communication (verbal/written) and technical skills.
- Software proficiency (Excel, Outlook, Box, PowerPoint, Word, Teams, OneAccord, etc.).
- Experience with CRM, spreadsheet, database, statistical, analytical, and social media tools.
- Proficient in data mining and predictive modeling.
- Understanding of statistics and analytical processes.
- Strong desire to work pleasantly with others.
- Ability to turn data into actionable information that creates meaningful impact touchpoints and engagement.
