Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety from an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum of five years of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) experience in manufacturing or construction.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills to establish priorities and work effectively in a team.
  • Strong communication (written, verbal, presentation) and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and SharePoint.
  • Technical writing skills for creating documents aimed at an adult learning audience.
  • Commitment to health, safety, and the environment.
  • Familiarity with safety and environmental legislation.

Responsibilities

  • Apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate hazards and reduce risks throughout the facility
  • Implement and advise on hazard control programs for the plant.
  • Proactively apply internal and external safety standards to reduce hazards.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and promote sustainable practices within the plant.
  • Stay informed about legislative changes and recommend necessary actions.
  • Serve as a local subject matter expert, supporting the development and review of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Conduct safety evaluations, self-audits, and run site safety committees.
  • Lead instructor-led training for EHS courses.
  • Maintain positive relationships with regulatory agencies and industry organizations.
  • Provide hands-on guidance to managers and supervisors regarding incident reporting and investigations to ensure company standards and processes are met.
  • Review incidents, complete root cause analyses, and drive corrective actions.
  • Maintain training records and facilitate safety training sessions.
  • Implement written EHS programs aligned with jurisdictional requirements.
  • Ensure monthly safety and environmental inspections are completed and recommend improvements.
  • Provide internal support for workers’ compensation cases. Facility safety contact for work comp claims questions, interfaces with insurance adjusters, medical professionals, and injured workers.
  • Manage the plant’s budget for health and safety spending.
  • Facilitate new hire safety training during onboarding.
