Hearings Referee

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
• Five (5) years of experience as a trial attorney in criminal, civil, or family litigation
• Currently approved by the Oregon Supreme Court to sit as a Circuit Court Judge pro tempore OR approved and complete the process to sit as an Oregon Circuit Court Judge pro tempore within 60 calendar days of the date of hire

Responsibilities

• Preside over a wide variety of legal matters including Family Abuse Prevention Act (FAPA) hearings, family law hearings, criminal hearings, civil commitment hearings, violation hearings, small claims and landlord/tenant motions, and other cases assigned
• Advise rights to parties in court
• Hear witness testimonies and identify other evidence considered
• Issue opinions on restraining orders and search and arrest warrants
• Meet with representatives of agencies including the District Attorney’s office, Law Enforcement, and others to facilitate the optimum use of services
• Assigned tasks may be changed to accommodate workload and organizational needs

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of statutes, case law, and procedure applicable to the types of hearings being conducted
• Knowledge of the rule of evidence and procedure
• Skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing
• Skill in legal research techniques
• Experience using computer programs to search, enter, and maintain information
• Ability to understand, interpret, and apply to case laws, rules regulations and policy
• Ability to deal with litigants from varied socio-economic backgrounds who may be angry, distraught, or confused
