Requirements

  • Bachelor’s/University degree; advanced degree in journalism a plus
  • 10+ years of experience in business writing and editing, including digital publishing, preferably for an English-language business publication or professional-services firm
  • A deep understanding of global business trends; detailed knowledge of and interest in the energy and materials industries and sustainability
  • Data literacy and familiarity with audience engagement (e.g., SEO, social media)
  • Strong mastery of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint) and team share tools (e.g., SharePoint, Slack, Zoom)
  • Proficiency and fluency in verbal and written English is required; other language skills are a plus
  • Excellent editorial skills (e.g., writing, editing), judgment, and business literacy, with ability to rapidly absorb complex ideas and distill them into accessible copy for global audiences
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, presentation)
  • Confidence in interactions with senior staff and subject-matter experts; strong ability to achieve consensus across multiple stakeholders
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to challenge content based on industry knowledge
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills; ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, manage complex processes, and meet short- and long-term deadlines
  • Ability to work independently in a low-structure environment and to deal with ambiguity; understanding of when to proactively seek guidance, and willingness to do so

Responsibilities

  • Engage and inspire colleagues through thought partnership and leadership skills to advance the Firm’s publishing objectives
  • Become fluent in McKinsey’s production-related processes and resources, with strong editing, fact-checking, and content management support
  • Manage editorial publications and programs, coordinating with relevant McKinsey publishing groups and stakeholders, to ensure projects are completed, approved, produced, and published to meet tight deadlines
  • Act as a thought partner and service provider (e.g., line editor), working with McKinsey authors—typically senior consultants and industry/functional experts—to create publishing strategies that advance cell and Firm objectives
  • Develop persuasive storylines and write compelling drafts covering business topics, with a focus on the energy and materials transition (including sustainability, green business building, climate tech, oil & gas, electric power, agriculture, and mining)
  • Shape content copy (e.g., a PowerPoint presentation, an outline, speaker notes) into a range of editorial products such as articles, white papers, reports, blog posts, podcasts, and videos
  • Review and edit content that rigorously follows conventions of written English and ensure consistency of voice/tone/style and alignment with firm style and risk/reputation guidelines, playing an advisory role with authors in discussion and development of changes
  • Clearly communicate with internal and external teams and relevant McKinsey leadership in support of an increasing volume of editorial projects
  • Lead projects/workstreams independently or with a designated team
  • Stay up to date on business news and trends, as well as the firm’s research, to ensure communications are informed by current public discussion/research and aligned with the firm’s position
  • Support entry-level and junior editors as part of their and your career development
  • Engage in additional ad hoc editorial projects as well
