Requirements
- Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate on or before the date of the structured interview.
- Have a valid Maryland Class C Non-Commercial driver’s license or an equivalent license, and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City’s driver’s permit.
- Current Basic Life Support Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or equivalent from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician.
- Current Certification as a Maryland Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or equivalent, from the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS).
- Candidates for positions in this class must be 18 years of age and a United States Citizen or a Resident Alien at the time of application.
Responsibilities
- Receive academic and field training in providing medical treatment at the scene of an accident or illness.
- Analyze and take command of patient care with full responsibility for the patient until the patient is transported to a medical facility and is relieved into the care of proper medical staff.
- Work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Perform work at the scene of medical emergencies, major traffic and other accidents, natural and man-made disasters where there is exposure to hazardous situations and emotionally traumatic events.
- Engage in strenuous physical activity such as lifting, climbing, and bending.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to read, speak and comprehend the English language.
- Ability to learn how to drive an ambulance and operate equipment safely under emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Ability to learn how to administer first-aid and related emergency medical techniques.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
