Emergency Medical Technician – Fire Department

Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate on or before the date of the structured interview.
Have a valid Maryland Class C Non-Commercial driver’s license or an equivalent license, and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City’s driver’s permit.
Current Basic Life Support Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or equivalent from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician.
Current Certification as a Maryland Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or equivalent, from the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS).
Candidates for positions in this class must be 18 years of age and a United States Citizen or a Resident Alien at the time of application.

Receive academic and field training in providing medical treatment at the scene of an accident or illness.
Analyze and take command of patient care with full responsibility for the patient until the patient is transported to a medical facility and is relieved into the care of proper medical staff.
Work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Perform work at the scene of medical emergencies, major traffic and other accidents, natural and man-made disasters where there is exposure to hazardous situations and emotionally traumatic events.
Engage in strenuous physical activity such as lifting, climbing, and bending.

Ability to read, speak and comprehend the English language.
Ability to learn how to drive an ambulance and operate equipment safely under emergency and non-emergency situations.
Ability to learn how to administer first-aid and related emergency medical techniques.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
