Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health, engineering, or related sciences with 3+ years of EHS-related experience in the medical device industry, manufacturing, laboratory operations, academia, insurance, consulting, and/or health care or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and manage EH&S policies, programs, and practices, as assigned EH&S programs.
- Plan and implement procedures, programs, and submit regulatory reports in compliance with the local, state, and/or federal agencies.
- Communicate closely with and take instructions from the EH&S Manager to achieve department goals and organizational goals according to key metrics.
- Work with EH&S Manager for the promotion of safety in the workplace, community, or industry safety groups and programs.
- Coordinate and assist with the Safety Committee and its subcommittees.
- Conduct hazard and risk assessments in cooperation with departments.
- Perform ergonomic evaluations and recommend control strategies to address risk factors.
- Train managers, supervisors, and employees on EH&S programs to meet standards and enhance company safety culture including, but not limited to, new employee orientation (NEO) and other EH&S training.
- Lead and/or assist with special environmental projects and worker’s compensation program.
- Investigate EH&S incidents including but not limited to, injuries, illnesses, environment-related incidents, and near-miss events.
- Inspect facilities to detect existing hazards, conduct risk assessment, determine corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follow up to ensure measures have been implemented.
- Assist with the company’s contractor safety program.
- Support the emergency response to incidents.
- Maintain documentation and records on EH&S programs, including, but not limited to, CAL-OSHA, Fed-OSHA, FDA, Alameda County, and other State and local authorities.
- Work with Human Resources on workers’ compensation and related matters.
- Attend and complete EH&S training for professional development, and other Penumbra required training.
- Adhere to the Company’s Quality Management System (QMS) as well as domestic and global quality system regulations, standards, and procedures.
- Understands relevant security, privacy and compliance principles and adheres to the regulations, standards, and procedures that are applicable to the Company.
- Ensure other members of the department follow the QMS, regulations, standards, and procedures.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of compliance to California’s OSHA general industry safety orders that apply to facilities-related activities, including safe work practices and personal protection, basic fire protection, lock out – tag out, hazardous materials, material handling and movement, forklift safety, ladder safety, electrical safety, chemical hygiene, industrial hygiene, basic ergonomics, emergency response, and related Cal-OSHA requirements that apply to Penumbra.
- Master’s degree in occupational safety and health; Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certification on Professional Ergonomics (CPE), Certified Industrial Engineering (CIE), and/or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHHM)
- Title 22 Hazardous Waste Generator certification; HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response). Basic knowledge of EH&S-related ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and OHSAS 18001and OSHA regulations, California hazardous materials and waste regulations, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, and FDA’s Quality System Regulations and their application to the company’s EH&S programs; Radiation Safety, Laser Safety, and Workers’ Compensation
- First-Aid and CPR trained, forklift train-the-trainer, portable fire extinguisher, valid driver’s license
- Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with high degree of accuracy and attention to detail; ability to communicate with all levels of employees, contractors, and suppliers.
- Ability to understand information such as labels and instructions, receive job assignments and communicate progress and/or completion of assignments.
- Ability to work independently, while effectively organizing and prioritizing work.
- Ability to work a varied schedule, as needed, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other standard office tools.
