Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology from a regionally accredited institution or
  • Bachelor’s degree in related science from a regionally accredited institution and
  • Vocational or Technical Training from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) accredited cytotechnology program
  • CLIA defined Qualifications: § 493.1423 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications
  • CLIA defined Qualifications: § 493.1489 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications
  • CLIA defined Qualifications: § 493.1491 Technologist qualifications on or before February 28, 1992

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures.
  • Prioritizes work assignments/tasks.
  • Assesses specimens acceptability and appropriately triages to a pathologist.
  • Performs analytical tests.
  • Detects and differentiates the presence or absence of disease in gynecologic and non-gynecologic samples.
  • Independently renders diagnosis and signs out gynecologic specimens deemed as ‘negative for intraepithelial lesion’ or which contain microorganisms not requiring pathologist review.
  • Refers abnormal cases to the pathologist.
  • Evaluates results for accuracy, and resolves complex test problems.
  • May provide oversight as a key operator of a work area.
  • Performs and documents required instrument maintenance and quality control; takes appropriate remedial action.
  • Ensures appropriate record keeping and retention.
  • May assist with procedure writing, validation and implementation of new methodologies.
  • Performs proficiency testing as assigned.
  • Participates and assists in the direct observation of staff for the annual competency program.
  • Accurate and timely collection and processing of specimens.
  • Reviews orders and verifies correct patient identification.
  • Assists in the collection of biopsies and provides rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) of specimen acceptability.
  • Prepares specimens for analysis ensuring appropriate identification throughout the process.
  • May function as Charge Tech in absence of manager or senior staff.
  • May function as contact for customers in absence of technical specialist or manager.
  • Trains others in work area(s).
  • Participates in departmental or system wide meetings, projects or committees as assigned.
  • May assist with department scheduling.
  • Stocks, rotates and requests supplies on a regular basis to ensure proper availability in the work area.
  • Performs various clerical duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.
