Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, or related field
- ASCP Certification Clinical Laboratory Specialist in Cytogenetics – ASCP(CG) at the time of employment or become certification-eligible after 12 months of hire date – must pass exam within 2 years of the date of hire
- Previous experience as a cytogenetic technologist with ASCP certification in Cytogenetics is desired
- Clinical laboratory experience and a strong interest in medical genetics and genomics will be considered
Responsibilities
- Verifies and labels specimens and specimen related materials with two correct patient identifiers
- Sets up and maintains cell and tissue cultures for chromosomal analysis, FISH, and/or cryopreservation
- Prepares reagents, solutions, and maintains tissue culture logs and QC documentation
- Performs all tissue culture lab duties including culture maintenance, harvesting, and slide preparations according to established protocols
- Performs microscopic analysis, obtains and interprets high quality detailed digital images and karyograms
- Summarizes and records microscopic results utilizing correct ISCN nomenclature and assumes responsibility for complete and accurate reports
- Investigates technical problems with procedures and monitors preventive maintenance of all work related equipment and supplies
- Maintains specimen and QC logs and manages stock/inventory of laboratory supplies in their workstation
- Teaches and assists new cytogenetic technologists, lab assistants, fellows, residents, and other personnel as assigned
- Participates in orientation and training of new laboratory staff, residents, fellows, and students
- Develops new technologies and procedures to ensure Beaumont Health stays in the forefront of the most current technological advances in genetics
- Participates in Q.I./process improvements, data collection, QC documentation, and/or CAP surveys as applicable to the assigned department
- Engages in staff activities of a High Reliability Organization (HRO)
- Assists in training new hires as applicable/assigned
- Attends staff meetings and committee meetings as assigned
- Ensures efficient use of time in completing tasks accurately and timely
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a cytogenetic technologist with ASCP certification in Cytogenetics is desired
- Clinical laboratory experience and a strong interest in medical genetics and genomics will be considered
