Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in insurance or business administration, or equivalent relevant experience
- One year of experience in commercial lines underwriting
- Good knowledge of underwriting and risk analysis
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions
- Strong customer service skills
- Ability to work effectively with others, as well as independently
- Ability to maintain high standards of professional competence
- Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media
- Ability to work on multiple projects while meeting deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Occasional travel; a valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if traveling
Responsibilities
- Maintains and grows a profitable book of business for assigned territory within underwriting authority
- Evaluates accounts for risk selection and pricing purposes
- Analyzes exposure, company and branch risk appetite, account premium and loss history, financial data, line(s) of business, price guidance, motor vehicle records, online sources of information, reports from premium audit or risk improvement and other relevant information to underwrite policies
- Offers appropriate coverage for exposures
- Maintains proper file documentation in connection with accounts
- Develops and fosters agency relationships
- Educates agents on EMC products, underwriting appetite, systems, and services
- Visits agencies to discuss accounts and provide agents with updates at EMC
- Collaborates with marketing representatives to ensure agents receive great customer experiences, responsiveness, and select EMC as their insurer of choice
- Effectively communicate accept and reject decisions to agents
- Collaborates with experienced underwriters to continue to develop understanding of company and branch risk appetite
- Consults experienced underwriters to ask questions and gain understanding in underwriting best practices
- Supports underwriting team, including reviewing endorsements or assigning endorsements to other team members and analyzing small business or middle market policies
- Participates in the agency planning and review processes with marketing and branch management
- Monitors progress of assigned agents and guides agents in achieving annual goals
