Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Certified Registered Central Supply Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing Department Technician (CSPDT), or Certified Surgical Technician (CST)
  • Competent working knowledge in all aspects of Sterile Processing
  • Demonstrated competency in all areas of Sterile Processing tasks, procedures, practices
  • Advanced knowledge of cleaning, disinfection and decontamination processes and sterilizers
  • Advanced understanding of types and functions of instruments and equipment (e.g. endoscopic, microsurgical, robotic and power)
  • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically within a multi-functional team
  • Experience and understanding in the use of computers, as well as the ability to learn software relevant to Sterile Processing
  • Ability to successfully function in a fast-paced, service oriented environment
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends

Responsibilities

  • Operates and monitors sterilization equipment
  • Prioritizes daily tasks based on interpretation of surgical schedule, determining the requirement for instruments for each surgical case
  • Disassembles carts and follows Universal Precautions for decontamination
  • Sterilizes, disinfects durable medical equipment and instruments, packages clean supplies and instruments, maintains records for all instruments and transports sterilized items to the floor
  • Assembles sterilized instruments and rechecks all instruments for cleanliness and/or impairment. Properly checks power equipment
  • Takes measures to allow for easy instrument tracking including following labeling processes, use of engraver, reporting and documenting all missing instruments and implants replaced in trays
  • Communicates the equipment and instrument inventory status with the Central Processing staff and Surgery Charge Nurse including order status, back orders and/or changes
  • Responds to emergency situations by ensuring all emergency, trauma and add-on cases are supplied properly and delivered to the Operating Room in a timely manner
  • Utilizes applications and technology to accurately facilitate record keeping in accordance with State and Federal regulations
  • Provides on the job training on the job training (OJT) to newly hired associates in the department
  • Promotes mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abides by service behavior standards
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • May be required to work overtime based on business need
  • May be required to float to other departments (within scope of competency and qualifications) based on business need
  • May be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled shift

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1+ year of experience in a hospital or clinic operating room
