Requirements

  • Knowledge of admission, registration and degree program requirements.
  • Knowledge of academic standards governing the student population.
  • Knowledge of student recruitment and retention principles.
  • Knowledge of FERPA regulations and practices.
  • Knowledge of computers, job-related software programs, and student information systems.
  • Knowledge of current development, standards, methods, and trends that will demonstrate professional competency in the field of activity.
  • Knowledge of program evaluation techniques and methodology.

  • Ability to provide services in case management model.

Responsibilities

  • Assists prospective and current students in developing and planning achievable career and educational goals consistent with their abilities and interests using helpful tools provided by the College.
  • Creates a student-centered academic advisement environment to demonstrate the mission and core values of SFCC.
  • Collaborates with various departments to ensure student information accuracy with in the College’s Student Information System.
  • Discusses and reinforces with advisee the linkages and relationships between instructional program and occupation/career.
  • Engages with advisees regarding unsatisfactory work (class attendance, notice of failing grades, incomplete grades, academic probation/suspension, etc.).
  • Informs and, if necessary, refers advisees to other institutional resources when attendance, or other personal problems require intervention by other professionals (Counseling Services, Community Resources, Behavior Intervention, etc.).
  • Interprets and communicates student policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Maintains an up-to-date advising guide, with a summary record of performance to date (grade reports, transcript, requirements completed, etc.), dates of advisement, notation of special circumstances, up electronic records, etc. within a case management model.
  • Maintains appropriate communication within College’s degree audit system.
  • May review and make recommendations with advisee for designated educational transactions (registration, schedule, drops/adds, withdrawals, change of major, waivers, transfer credits, graduation requirements, etc.).
  • Monitors progress toward academic goals and meets with advisees as needed, but at least once each term to review their progress toward completing the proposed academic program and to discuss successes, challenges, and other performance indicators.
  • Provides effective information to prospective and current students regarding college’s policies and procedures as related to individual student needs.
  • Provides academic advisement and career guidance to advisee’s and guides to successful degree completion.
  • Although the above are typical of the duties and responsibilities normally performed, additional duties and responsibilities requiring similar skills, knowledge and dexterity may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with direct student interaction in a post-secondary setting.
  • Experience with Student Information System software.
  • Experience with providing advocacy or case management services.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English).
