Requirements
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience.
- Work history in a precision optics manufacturing environment (e.g. optical elements, including lenses, prisms, windows, etc.)
- Experience operating and programming 3-axis and 5-axis CNC manufacturing equipment using CAM software (e.g. Mastercam or similar platforms).
- U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.
Responsibilities
- Provide engineering support for the manufacturing of optical lenses, prisms and windows using grinding and polishing techniques across a range of materials, including optical glass, silicon, germanium, zinc sulfide, zinc selenide, and fused silica.
- Develop detailed process plans that meet drawing specifications, optimize cost and schedule, and ensure quality and operator efficiency.
- Review specifications, procedures, and engineering documentation to ensure compliance with internal and external standards.
- Support bid and proposal efforts by estimating time and resources required for manufacturing activities.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives through data analysis and process optimization.
- Determine and specify equipment needs for manufacturing and testing.
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing technicians on the factory floor to resolve production issues in real time.
- Analyze product and equipment failures, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
- Serve as a technical liaison for management, customers, and internal teams on high-visibility projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in Mechanical Engineering, Precision Engineering, or related field.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and apply GD&T.
- Knowledgeable in optical manufacturing techniques, including grinding, pitch and pad polishing methods.
- Hands-on proficiency with planetary and spindle polishing machines.
- Experience with optical metrology equipment such as Optical Interferometers.
- Generating and evaluating CAD models using Creo, SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
- Root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
- Process development and documentation.
- Leading advanced technical projects.
- Flexibility to adjust working hours based on business needs.
