Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- 6+ years of experience in optical coating design, development, and characterization, and manufacturing
- Demonstrated knowledge of thin film optics, and optical thin film design theory
- Hands-on experience with coating process development, including vacuum deposition techniques (PVD, CVD, ALD), wet coatings, and optical materials
- Proficient in optical thin film characterization, associated equipment, and methodologies
- Proficiency in coating design software, such as Essential Macleod, OptiLayer or TFCalc, and understanding how to incorporate the coating response in optical simulation software, such as FRED, Zemax, or Code V
- Proven expertise in resolving intricate material and interfacial issues related to optical coating processes in high-volume manufacturing settings, leveraging in-depth knowledge of thin-film physics and process optimization techniques
Responsibilities
- Design and develop thin film optical coatings for high-volume manufacturing applications, including angular and spectral transmission control, polarization control, phase control, and other specialized requirements, with the consideration of process complexity, yield, reliability, and cost
- Characterize and analyze the performance of thin film coatings using various techniques, including spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and other relevant methods
- Develop and optimize optical coating processes, including vacuum deposition techniques (PVD, CVD, ALD), wet coatings and other deposition techniques
- Collaborate with internal cross-functional teams and external industry partners to integrate coating designs into larger systems and ensure compatibility with other components
- Troubleshoot coating-related issues and provide technical support to manufacturing teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- Experience with high-volume manufacturing processes and equipment
- Familiarity with industry-standard quality control procedures and protocols
- Knowledge of programming languages, such as Python, MATLAB, or C++
- Experience with machine learning algorithms and their application to optical coating design and optimization
- Experience in designing and executing experiments using Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies, with expertise in statistical data analysis and interpretation of results to inform process optimization and improvement
