Requirements
- Requires paralegal certificate, or JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study.
- At least 2 years of litigation paralegal experience, including 1 year of experience in automated litigation support.
- Sound working knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
- Hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems, e.g., Relativity, Excel, JEFS/Box.com, Word, Zoom, Teams, Power Point, and social media tools
- Hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
- Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure.
- Advanced skills with Excel.
- Professional, can-do, customer-service attitude.
- Ability to travel is a must.
- Candidate must have a current and valid driver’s license.
Responsibilities
- Performs case preparation and evaluation, legal and factual research, legal documents, trial preparation, witness interviews, and other related paralegal functions.
- Assists an attorney by reading documents aloud in a clear and distinct manner to the attorney.
- Proofreads, drafts, or revises documents; and explains and describes documents, including charts or graphs to the attorney.
- Reads and analyzes voluminous complex documents to explain relevant content to the attorney.
- Uses assistive technologies for the blind, including operating devices and Text-to Speech Reader software programs such as Job Access with Speech (JAWS) software.
- Prepares for and assists the attorney during telephone calls, meetings, depositions, trials, and court hearings.
- Travels with the attorney (as needed), arranges for associated travel needs, and may be required to drive to meetings using a government furnished vehicle if public transportation is not readily available.
- Manages the logistical aspects of a trial/hearing/deposition and relay events that would normally be picked up only visually.
- Contacts and interviews potential witnesses to gather information and assists with preparing witnesses for court appearances, depositions, etc.
- Assists the attorney during the conduct of depositions, trials, hearings, other court proceedings including managing exhibits and courtroom presentation technology and describing proceedings to the attorney.
- Conducts legal research of defined scope and complexity, referencing and citing sources, applicable precedents, transcripts, legislative history, and other relevant documents.
- Identifies inconsistencies in text (including Bluebooking for legal citations). In layout, plans spacing and indentations of charts and tables in text.
- Handles sensitive witnesses and information. Uses discretion and maintains confidentiality of information learned in the course of performing duties.
Preferred Qualifications
- Spanish Language skills preferred, but not required.
- Experience with cite checking/Bluebooking
- Trial experience
