Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree requirement (BA, BS, BSN, etc.)
  • 2 years of previous management experience focused in pediatric critical care services.
  • CPR certification
  • Professional Registered Nurse certification
  • PALS certification (PALS shall include both cognitive and practical skills evaluation)

Responsibilities

  • Ensures effective and efficient staffing patterns to meet patient volumes and needs.
  • Coordinates the hiring of all staff with other supervisors and staff as appropriate.
  • Oversees the educational activities of staff and works with the APN/CPS to encourage and facilitate employee development and growth including clinical research.
  • Creates an environment that is conducive to staff growth and development, job satisfaction and team development.
  • Prepare performance reviews for staff. Communicates performance ratings and salary adjustments for staff.
  • Ensures job descriptions are written for positions and are up-to-date.
  • Implements and coordinates disciplinary procedures across the department. Monitors and facilitates the resolution of performance problems.
  • Conducts and facilitates staff meetings relating to department, hospital, and corporate activities.
  • Manages and facilitates staff to performance in accordance with standard practice to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Facilitates role of Clinical Operation Assistants to oversee day-to-day operations.
  • Monitors, collects and analyzes data that represents all aspects of department operations.
  • Develops and implements policies, procedures and practices that support and meet Accrediting Organization as well as Advocate, Hope and CHMC guidelines.
  • Identifies areas for operations efficiency and improvements and makes appropriate changes.
  • Participates in the development of long and short-range goals and objectives.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of new services.
  • Accountable for operations on a twenty-four hour basis.
  • Participates in the marketing of department services and community education.
  • Collaborates with members of the healthcare team to facilitate the Care Management process.
  • Creates and manages department budget and provides monthly variance analysis.
  • Recommends and oversees measures to control expenses and/or enhance revenues.
  • Conducts and assists with the development of program proposals and feasibility studies.
  • Monitors department productivity levels and resource efficiency to meet patient needs.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with departments and management throughout the hospital and system.
  • Works with other departments on improvement of services and/or expansion of services.
  • Communicates with department staff and staff from other hospital departments to receive, respond to and communicate information.
  • Participates on department, hospital-wide and system-wide committees.
  • Responsible for enhancing the image of the institution and staff through research, marketing and advanced practice.
  • Establishes priorities to meet the health and medical needs of the individual, family and community.
  • Keeps abreast of new diagnostic and treatment approaches along with market changes in order to assist in meeting the challenges of an ever-changing health care market.
  • Identifies educational needs for nursing staff and ancillary staff where applicable.
  • Contributes to the professional development of others to improve patient care and to foster the professional’s growth.
  • Remains abreast of current trends, procedures and equipment through attendance at conferences, seminars and workshops. Provides corresponding information to staff.
  • Serves as a resource person for professional and lay personnel outside the Medical Center.
  • Contributes to resolving the ethical problems or dilemmas of individuals or systems.
  • Ensures that standards of practice are developed, understood, implemented and evaluated within the department.
  • Assesses outcomes and implements improved processes within the department.
  • Develops and incorporates PI projects within the department.
  • Ensures department compliance with all regulatory agency standards, i.e., federal, state, city, Accrediting Organization, IDPH, etc.
  • Submits requests for capital purchase.
  • Promotes patient safety by reporting and following through on issues through established channels and participating as requested in safety initiatives.
  • Facilitates and implements systems that promote and maintain effective communication and collaboration with physicians, nurses and other members of the health care team.
  • Acts as a resource to nursing staff for complex patients and assist the staff in assessing and planning the care of these patients.
  • Provides role modeling to nursing staff to enhance professionalism and customer service.
