Requirements

  • 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse required.
  • 1 year of experience under mother-baby clinical care, antepartum or postpartum or as a Lactation Consultant.
  • Basic Life Support Health Care Provider
  • Certified Lactation Consultant
  • Registered Nursing License
  • Possess the knowledge to provide a comprehensive lactation consultation and breastfeeding education.
  • Knowledge of nutrition and pharmacology related to the aspects of breastfeeding.
  • Knowledge of breastfeeding techniques, equipment and technology.
  • Knowledge of the nursing process and newborn assessment.
  • The ability to interpret research for application into current breastfeeding practice.

Responsibilities

  • Utilization of the Nursing Process as it relates to Lactation: Performs bedside lactation rounds, performs a comprehensive assessment of lactating and breastfeeding patients.
  • Plans, organizes and delivers lactation management services to all breastfeeding mothers.
  • Communicates with the physicians regarding the lactation management of their patients through verbal and written reports.
  • Acts as a resource for physicians, nurses and dietitians related to breastfeeding issues.
  • Evaluates the patient’s response to the plan of care and interventions and modifies the plan as needed.
  • Follows up with discharged patients for ongoing support and assistance.
  • Develops, promotes, implements, evaluates and revises breastfeeding policies and procedures.
  • Staff, Patient and Family Education: Assesses the educational needs of all breastfeeding, lactating patients and provides the appropriate educational resources.
  • Initiates, consults and collaborates with available patient education resources to enhance the self-care capability of the breastfeeding patient and family members.
  • Documents patient and family education activities via electronic and or written nursing records.
  • Professional Development: Regularly participates in activities to maintain, expand nursing and lactation knowledge.
  • Participates in decision-making activities related to breastfeeding processes at the Hospital.
  • Performance Improvement: Demonstrates and actively promotes compliance with all state and federal regulatory and accrediting agencies (i.e., patient safety, infection control, HIPAA, etc.).
  • Appropriately documents in accordance with departmental and organizational policies.
  • Financial Stability: Advises supervisor of current or anticipated problems.
  • Appropriately uses time and attendance system and adheres to related policies and procedures.
  • Is aware of compliance issues specially relating to fraud, abuse and reports them immediately.
