Responsibilities

  • Actively lead the creation and implementation of all policy, procedures, and processes for graduate programs in the context of advisement
  • Identify potential issues relating to departmental operations regarding advisement processes / policies
  • Lead and assist in the interpretation of and adherence to University and department policies and procedures
  • Assist programs and students in understanding University and college policies related to academics, conduct, petitions, accommodations, transfers, absences, withdrawal, dismissal, readmission, and other graduate student matters
  • Oversee the electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) approval process
  • Direct the bi-annual graduate student evaluation process
  • Lead, oversee, and approve all department requests for the official graduation clearance of enrolled graduate students
  • Manage the implementation of advisement for new graduate programs
  • Provide project management for relevant curriculum additions, deletions, and changes
  • Oversee adherence to both University and Graduate Studies policies and procedures with regards to advisement issues
  • Collaborate with OIT to develop, maintain, manage, and innovate in advisement technologies and platforms
  • Determine and utilize the most effective delivery tools for campus-wide dissemination of advisement information and training
  • Assure quality of written communication and published materials
  • Attend professional development training and conferences
  • Provide daily leadership and advisement to colleges, graduate departments, graduate programs, faculty, and staff regarding compliance with the established University graduate student advisement policy and procedures
  • Collaborate with International Student Services, enrolled graduate students, and graduate programs to ensure federal compliance with established international student regulations at the graduate level
  • Collaborate with the BYU Office of Belonging to drive and promote belonging among the BYU community and particularly among BYU graduate students
  • Develop and implement both strategies and tactics to promote a positive image of all graduate programs and of the University
  • Represent BYU Graduate Studies with the University at large and on appropriate committees
  • Manage, train, develop, and mentor 1 to 2 student employees and 0 to 1 staff employees who directly assist with advisement and related processes
  • Represent BYU Graduate Studies and the University’s 90+ graduate programs with peer institutions and national associations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in graduate student advisement management or similar university-based leadership positions
  • 5+ years of experience leading policy development, coordinating legal issues, plus advising both domestic and international students
  • Statistical reporting – preferred
  • Human resource management – preferred
  • Project management – preferred
  • BYU student information systems related to graduate students, such as AIM, Y-SIS, and GradProg – preferred
