Requirements
- Bachelor’s or associate degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, or a related field
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in environmental compliance or related disciplines
- Working knowledge of key federal environmental regulations including the Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively across all levels of the organization and with external partners
- Detail-oriented, with excellent organizational and prioritization skills; able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Collaborative team player with the ability to facilitate meetings and drive consensus
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, including the use of data to inform decisions
- Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, PDF, SharePoint)
Responsibilities
- Lead Environmental Compliance Programs: Develop, manage, and evolve compliance programs to meet federal, state, and local regulatory requirements related to air emissions, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous waste, and fire safety (e.g., IFC, NFPA, NIOSH)
- Permit & Reporting Oversight: Own and oversee processes for obtaining and maintaining environmental permits, as well as completing and submitting required reports. Ensure documents are reviewed and updated annually in accordance with applicable state and local regulations
- Issue Management & Escalation: Identify, escalate, and help resolve complex environmental compliance challenges related to permitting, reporting, and regulatory inspections
- Program Modernization: Use performance data and operational insights to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for continuous improvement across compliance programs
- Regulatory & Industry Expertise: Stay current on environmental regulations, codes, and best practices through ongoing training, regulatory review, and active participation in professional associations such as RILA and NAEM
- Cross-functional Partnership: Collaborate with internal teams to ensure that business operations align with compliance requirements and best practices, including involvement in permitting processes like HMBP, Tier II, HMT2, and high-pile storage regulations
- Sustainability Alignment: Support Target Forward by participating in initiatives to reduce the environmental footprint of our air, water, and waste-related operations
- Regulatory Engagement: Serve as a primary point of contact for regulatory inspections, supporting preparation, response, and follow-up activities
- Training & Communication: Define environmental compliance training needs, communicate expectations, and support content development in partnership with training teams
- Strategic Planning & Prioritization: Help evaluate and prioritize environmental compliance needs, contributing to resource planning and risk mitigation strategies
- Team Leadership & Culture: Lead or contribute to cross-functional teams, fostering a positive, inclusive team culture in line with Target’s values of Inclusivity, Connection, and Drive
- Other Duties: Perform additional responsibilities as needed to support the environmental compliance function and broader business goals
