Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in medical technology from a regionally accredited institution or
- Bachelor’s degree in related science from a regionally accredited institution and
- Vocational or Technical Training from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) accredited cytotechnology program
- CLIA defined Qualifications: § 493.1423 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications
- CLIA defined Qualifications: § 493.1489 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications
- CLIA defined Qualifications: § 493.1491 Technologist qualifications on or before February 28, 1992
Responsibilities
- Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures.
- Prioritizes work assignments/tasks.
- Assesses specimens acceptability and appropriately triages to a pathologist.
- Performs analytical tests.
- Detects and differentiates the presence or absence of disease in gynecologic and non-gynecologic samples.
- Independently renders diagnosis and signs out gynecologic specimens deemed as ‘negative for intraepithelial lesion’ or which contain microorganisms not requiring pathologist review.
- Refers abnormal cases to the pathologist.
- Evaluates results for accuracy, and resolves complex test problems.
- May provide oversight as a key operator of a work area.
- Performs and documents required instrument maintenance and quality control; takes appropriate remedial action.
- Ensures appropriate record keeping and retention.
- May assist with procedure writing, validation and implementation of new methodologies.
- Performs proficiency testing as assigned.
- Participates and assists in the direct observation of staff for the annual competency program.
- Accurate and timely collection and processing of specimens.
- Reviews orders and verifies correct patient identification.
- Assists in the collection of biopsies and provides rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) of specimen acceptability.
- Prepares specimens for analysis ensuring appropriate identification throughout the process.
- May function as Charge Tech in absence of manager or senior staff.
- May function as contact for customers in absence of technical specialist or manager.
- Trains others in work area(s).
- Participates in departmental or system wide meetings, projects or committees as assigned.
- May assist with department scheduling.
- Stocks, rotates and requests supplies on a regular basis to ensure proper availability in the work area.
- Performs various clerical duties.
- Other duties as assigned.
