Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Risk Management and Insurance, or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Generally, 10 or more years of related experience, including 4 or more years of leadership experience.
  • Ability to travel to visit agents and brokers.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for activities and services of the department, ensuring an efficient level of administration and that company standards and customer relationships are maintained.
  • Investigates and maintains claims, reviews and determines coverage and/or liability, secures/analyzes necessary information in the investigation of claims.
  • Works toward the resolution of claims files, complaints and disputes and attends arbitrations, mediations, depositions or trials as necessary.
  • May affect settlements/reserves within prescribed limits and submit recommendations to supervisor on cases exceeding personal authority.
  • Ensures that claims payments are issued in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensures that claims handling is conducted in compliance with applicable statutes, regulations and other legal requirements, and that all applicable company procedures and policies are followed.
  • Advises reporting staff on claim files and extends settlement authority as necessary after reviewing files.
  • May establish reserves and make recommendations or reports for Corporate Claims or senior management.
  • Ensures that department or functional area meets policies and procedures. Aligns business unit with business objectives.
  • Responsible for performance and coaching of staff and decisions regarding talent selection, development, and performance management. Plans and ensures that the unit meets budget and performance targets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Continuing progress toward and/or the completion of a professional designation preferred, such as Associate in Underwriting (AU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Program in General Insurance (INS) or Associate of Risk Management (ARM), or a marketing designation.
  • Familiarity with marketing strategies and tools is beneficial.
