Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or Physics.
  • 8+ years of experience in analyzing atmospheric entry
  • Experience with compressible flow fluid dynamics modeling
  • Experience with ablative thermal protection systems
  • Experience with a high-level programming language such as Python, C, or C++
  • Self-directed and capable of balancing several tasks at one time.
  • Proven ability to work effectively and collaborate in a dynamic, fast paced, team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzing proposed supersonic and hypersonic flight vehicles to determine general design and thermal protection needs
  • Analyzing flight test data to determine vehicle thermal performance
  • Developing new and extending existing aerothermodynamic analysis capabilities as needed to deal with constantly developing flight vehicle requirements
  • Support a broad team by leading the creation of and/or modification of analytical models.
  • Perform complex integrated analysis for hypersonic vehicles assessing both aerothermodynamic environment and the accompanying thermal analysis and ablation modeling.
  • Integration of aerothermal, thermal analysis, and trajectory design to assess acreage and components.
  • Plan and model aerothermodynamic wind tunnel tests and material characterization testing.
  • Compare analytical model results with wind tunnel test data to resolve discrepancies and align results
  • Test applications and build test cases and scenarios for successful deployment of solutions.
  • Mentorship and training of other team members

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. and/or PhD in a relevant scientific or engineering field and academic/internship experience using Systems Engineering tools and processes
  • 15+ years of experience in analyzing atmospheric entry
  • Experience in material certification process for human spaceflight
  • Experience with carbon based TPS materials
  • Experience with material processing tools such as FIAT, CHAR, or Icarus
  • Experience with CFD codes such as LAURA, DPLR, LociCHEM, or US3D
  • Experience with ground testing for aerothermodynamics and material characterization.
  • Experience supporting wind tunnel testing and/or flight testing including data reduction and post-flight data analysis
  • Experience in design, analysis, and/or certification of aerospace safety critical systems.
  • Support up to 25% domestic travel to engage in milestone reviews, training, supplier/partner/customer/team engagements.
  • Experience supporting a project through the product development lifecycle
