Requirements

  • A high school graduate with a high degree of electrical and mechanical aptitude is preferred.
  • Understanding of power substation equipment and power system electrical fundamentals.
  • Ability to interpret substation one-line diagrams and electrical schematics.
  • Physically capable of handling substation switching duties including manual operation of various disconnecting devices.
  • General qualifications such as safety record and awareness, physical fitness, attendance and performance records will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Performing manual switching at various locations on the Company’s as directed by Systems Operations, Service Dispatchers or other supervision.
  • Replacing charts in substations as required and inspecting charts for excessive current or improper voltage levels, making adjustments on transformer tap changers, etc. to correct problems if possible.
  • Checking and maintaining supplies for recorders, location of fusing, circuitry for metering clocks, etc. and reporting all malfunctions to proper departmental authority for correction.
  • Checking fans, pumps, controls, checks for transformer oil leaks and condition of bushings and other related apparatus in and around substations.
  • Checking air and gas pressure on breakers, oil circuit breakers and other related equipment, reporting malfunctions of equipment and operating devices to the appropriate departmental authority.
  • Checking the general condition of substation yards, grounds and equipment in and around the property. Reporting any unusual conditions to the proper departments.
  • Operating assigned vehicle and maintaining necessary supplies and equipment on same as well as assisting in the instructing and training or retraining of employees in other departments on substation equipment and switching.
  • Coordinating activities with customers and others concerned with system operations for maximum safety and reliability of electric service.
  • Understanding and increasing IT knowledge as new technology is utilized and upgraded in Switchgear and Control houses.
  • Comfortable using a computer and adjusting to conditions as they are being implemented into Substation equipment condition management, requiring a high degree of self-motivation without direct supervision.
  • Utilizing multiple IT applications required for asset management during substation inspections.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and training in the area of maintenance and operation of substation equipment, such as breakers, transformers, disconnect switches, meters, etc.
  • Experience in the switching of substation equipment at all voltage levels.
  • Training and/or experience in interpreting various meters, charts and other indicators found within substations to determine if equipment is functioning properly.
  • Familiarity with Dispatcher ‘Hold Card’ procedures.
  • Any other qualifications contributing to the applicant’s ability to perform the job.
