Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • MBA or equivalent Advanced degree preferred
  • Five – Seven years experience in a progressively more responsible Health Care Financial position
  • Experience with budgeting, cost accounting and financial analysis

Responsibilities

  • Functions as the Hospital Controller responsible for budgeting, overall cost control, purchasing liaison, inventory and supply control, position control, and other financial matters as directed
  • Prepares and submits for approval the annual Operating Budget
  • Translates hospital objectives into departmental objectives
  • Assists operating management in identifying and implementing plans to achieve Budget objectives
  • Works with corporate Budget director to meet timing and data requirements
  • Establishes a Budget reporting process that focuses on measurable cost performance to complement and align with reporting for revenue elements
  • Integrates reporting input into senior management and corporate reports
  • Identifies cost control and cost management issues and recommends actions to resolve
  • Assists in the implementation of the corrective actions
  • Meets regularly with department and senior operating management to review financial results; participates in senior management meetings involving financial issues
  • Investigates variances from budget or plan
  • Quantifies the variance in dollar terms, and distinguishes those variances between price/rate and volume factors
  • Prepares and submits for approval the annual Capital Budget
  • Works with Departments and Senior Management to develop a criterion based selection process and to prioritize capital needs based on this process
  • Monitors the ongoing use of capital funds and reassessment of capital priorities as needed
  • Works with operating management to achieve cost and business objectives; establishes cost control mechanisms that are easily understood by operating management
  • Establishes cost metrics that management can use to achieve financial objectives
  • Identifies cost control and cost management issues and recommends actions to resolve
  • Assists in the implementation of the corrective actions
  • Works with Department Management and Senior Management in the review of new and existing product lines, contracts and business ventures to provide in-depth cost and financial analysis and make recommendations regarding financial issues
  • Approves personnel actions such as hires, fires, disciplines, etc.
  • Ensures the timely completion of performance appraisals
  • Allocates resources to carry out necessities required by the organization
  • Monitors activities for and ensures compliance with laws, government regulations, JCAHO requirements and DMC policies
  • As directed, implements external and internal audit recommendations
